A Russian news outlet that has been criticised as disinformation by Western commentators such as the Institute of Statecraft and the New York Times.

Sputnik News (formerly Voice of Russia and RIA Novosti) is a news agency, news website platform and radio broadcast service established by the Russian government-owned news agency Rossiya Segodnya.[1] Headquartered in Moscow, Sputnik News has regional editorial offices in Washington, Cairo, Beijing, Singapore, London and Edinburgh, focuses on global politics and economics and is geared towards a non-Russian audience.[2]

Sputnik News currently operates news websites, featuring reporting and commentary, in over 30 languages including English, Spanish, Polish, Serbian, and several others. The websites also house over 800 hours of radio broadcasting material each day and its newswire service runs around the clock.[3][4][5]

Criticism

Ben Nimmo (of the Institute for Statecraft) wrote as a “defence analyst” in The Times that Sputnik News is “an instrument of Russian state power, not an independent journalism outlet.”[6]

The New York Times wrote that Sputnik News engages in bias and disinformation,[7] and has been described as a Russian propaganda outlet.[8][9][10]
