The Social Democratic Party of Germany (German: Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands, SPD) is a social-democratic political party in Germany. It is one of the two major contemporary political parties in Germany along with the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU).

Bill Gates was a guest at a SPD party conference before the 2013 German elections. Gates took some time for a private chat with the Social Democrats for an hour, including a preliminary discussion with SPD leader Sigmar Gabriel and chancellor candidate Peer Steinbrück, which "filled the party with a certain pride". Some board members, as soon as Gates had arrived at the highly secured hotel, took out their mobile phones to take a souvenir snap shot. Gates had kind words to say about the candidate for chancellor.
