Gunter Huonker was a German politician. He was Parliamentary state secretary to Chancellor Helmut Schmidt from 1979 to 1982, when he attended the 1980 Bilderberg meeting.

Education

Huonker was the son of a tax consultant from Schwenningen. He attended high school there and spent a year as an exchange student in the USA. His last class teacher was Erhard Eppler. After graduating from high school, Huonker completed a degree in economics and law at the University of Freiburg. Since 1956 he was a member of the Freiburg Burschenschaft Alemannia[1], but resigned from it in 1981.[2]

Career

In 1967, he then joined the Freiburg local administration as head of the department. Already in 1968 he moved to the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation as head of the office of the then Federal Minister Erhard Eppler.[3]

He was a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) for more than 50 years. From 1981 to 1993 he was a member of the State board of the SPD Baden-Württemberg. For a long time he led this SPD regional group in the Bundestag.

From 1972 to 1994, Huonker was a member of the German Bundestag.

On December 10, 1979, he was appointed as Minister of State to the Federal Chancellor in the federal government led by Helmut Schmidt. On the occasion of a cabinet reshuffle, he took over the post of Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Finance on April 28, 1982. With the change of government and the end of the social-liberal coalition in October 1982, Huonker left the government.
