Wes Streeting is a British Labour Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ilford North since 2015. In the UK/General election/2024, Streeting was only narrowly re-elected with 15,647 votes – a drop of over 20% in vote share and a majority of just 528 – when challenged by the Independent pro-Palestinian candidate Leanne Mohamad who gained 15,119 votes.[1]

On 5 July 2024, Wes Streeting was appointed UK/Health and Social Care Secretary following Labour's landslide victory.[2] He was previously the Shadow Health Secretary and Streeting is being formed as a "new Tony Blair".[3]

Shadow team

Streeting was President of the National Union of Students (NUS), as well as Deputy Leader of the London Borough of Redbridge and Cabinet Member for Health an Wellbeing.[4]

Wes Streeting was Shadow Secretary of State for Child Poverty from May 2021 to November 2021, Shadow Minister for Schools from 2020 to 2021, and briefly Shadow Exchequer to the Treasury in 2020.

As Shadow Secretary for Health, Streeting is looking for policy solutions from "outside sources". This includes the Institute For Public Policy Research and the Tony Blair Institute, plus the pharmaceutical lobby.[5] Streeting said he would "hold the door wide open" to "private sector entrepreneurs" if the Labour Party enter government.[6]

Labour under Streeting supported mandatory Covid jabs for NHS and care workers.[7]

Streeting wanted the government to "do more" to counter anti-vaccination conspiracy theories.[8]

Scottish independence

On 10 May 2021, following the 2021 Scottish Parliament election when the SNP won 64 seats and intends to launch #IndyRef2, Wes Streeting tweeted:

@GordonBrown was absolutely brilliant on @BBCr4today on the future of the Union and the Labour Party, as was @ShabanaMahmood - Labour’s new National Campaign Coordinator - setting out the scale of Labour’s challenge and how we’ll meet it.[9]

Personal life

Wes Streeting lives in Redbridge, London. His partner is Joseph Dancey, a communications and public affairs adviser.[10] In October 2023, Dancey was selected for Stockton West in the next general election,[11] but failed to be elected.[12] On 22 October 2024, Joe Dancey was appointed Labour's new Executive Director of Policy and Communications at a reported salary of £100,000 per annum.[13]

Streeting's ex-boyfriend Josh MacAlister was selected for the new Whitehaven and Workington constituency,[14] which he won with a large majority.[15] This raised accusations of nepotism.[16]

In May 2021, Streeting revealed he had been diagnosed with kidney cancer and would be stepping back from frontline politics while he received treatment for it.[17] On 27 July 2021, Streeting announced that he had been declared cancer-free, following an operation to remove one of his kidneys.[18]

Sixty years ago or so, when my siblings or I were sick enough to be in bed, my mother would phone the surgery and the GP would come to our home to see us. This was perfectly normal. It is probably difficult for Generation Z to believe this really used to happen."
