Background
Born at Sampierdarena near Genoa, he was the son of Federico Valletta, an officer of the Italian Royal Army and later an official in Turin of the state railway company.[1] His mother was Teresa Quadrio from Valtellina who belonged to a family of minor nobility.
Education
Vittorio received an intense education from his mother (given the supposed gambling addiction his father[2]) and became an accountant by attending evening classes. Later, in 1909, he graduated from the Istituto Superiore di Commercio (now the Faculty of Economics and Commerce of the University of Turin) as a student-worker. As a result of his academic qualifications and background he was often known to colleagues and in the trade as "The Professor" (Il Professore).[3]
Career
He taught accountancy at a high school and worked at an accounting firm.
