Career
Hwang has worked for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Oxford Internet Institute, Tumblr, Mozilla Foundation, RAND, Stanford Center for Legal Informatics, Edelman, The PR company Barbarian Group, Creative Commons, Imgur and Percolate.[4] He has also published at the Atlantic Council[5] and Poynter Institute.
AI
Hwang was director of the Harvard-MIT Ethics and Governance of AI Initiative, "a $27M philanthropic fund and research effort working to advance the development of machine learning in the public interest".[4] He was Google's global public policy lead on AI, "leading outreach to government and civil society on issues surrounding the social impact of the technology".[3]
Hwang has collaborated with the White House on voluntary commitments around AI safety and responsible deployment and has also worked as a research fellow at Georgetown University's Center for Security and Emerging Technology.[6] He also was the global public policy lead for artificial intelligence and machine learning at Google, and the General Counsel and VP Operations for Substack.[6] In August 2024, Hwang became general counsel for Abridge, a company doing generative AI for clinical documentation in healthcare[6]

In 2017, Hwang recommended at the deep state Atlantic Council that government could "take a number of proactive steps to help combat the threat from disinformation", including "funding should be put toward the creation of collaborative online platforms for fact-checking digital media, putting "warning labels" on contents, government encouragement to ensure reliable financing of subservient "investigative journalism" and "media literacy campaigns to educate the public."[7]
