Austrian economist and banker. Former Bilderberg Steering committee.
Kothbauer has a background in both the banking industry and public administration, and has also previously worked at the National Bank of Austria. From 1976 to 1977 he worked at the Österreichische Länderbank, before going to the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, and worked there until 1978. He then worked again at the Österreichische Länderbank until 1984, before working two more years at the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Industry. From 1986 to 1988 he worked at the Chancellery (Kanzleramt), as chief of staff to the Chancellor of Austria.
In the 1990s, he held leading positions in e.g. Wiener Städtische Wechselseitige Versicherungsanstalt, Creditanstalt-Bankverein and Österreichische Postsparkasse, before he in 2000 was first employed by the National Bank of Austria. Here he sat on the executive board until 2001. He was then a senior adviser at Booz Allen Hamilton until 2004, and a partner in Asset Allocation Alpha Vermögensanlagen Consulting from 2001 to 2005.
In 2006, he was employed at the central bank for the second time, again as a member of the executive board. In 2008, he was then appointed Deputy Central Bank Governor (Vizepräsident).
Since 2003, he has also been chairman of the board of the University of Vienna.
He is an Auditor at European Forum Alpbach.
