Martin Schmid is a Swiss politician who attended the 2011 Bilderberg meeting.

Education

From 1991 he studied law at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) and graduated in 1995. During his studies he became a member of the student association Swiss Zofingerverein.[1] He was admitted to the bar in 1997 and received his doctorate in law in 2005.

Career

From 1997 to 2000 he was a research assistant at the Institute of Finance and Financial Law at the University of St. Gallen. From 2000 to 2002 he was an independent lawyer with a focus on tax and financial law and also worked part-time for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

From 1994 to 2002 he was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Graubünden (Grisons). On March 24, 2002, he was elected to the Governing Council of the Canton of Graubünden as of January 1, 2003. From 2003 to 2008 he headed the Department of Justice, Security and Health. He was the president of the government in 2007. From January 1, 2008, he headed the Department of Finance and Municipalities. In the parliamentary elections of 23 October 2011, Schmid was elected to Council of States (federal parliament) and resigned his mandate as a government councillor. He was re-elected in the elections of 2015, 2019 and 2023.[2]

Other positions

In addition to his position as a Member of the Council of States, he has been working as a lawyer at the law firm KUNZ SCHMID Rechtsanwälte und Notare AG in Chur since 2012.[3] He is also a member of the boards of directors of numerous companies, for example Swiss Life, Calanda Group (President), Engadiner Kraftwerke (President), Repower AG, Elettricità Industriale (President), the Association of the Swiss Gas Industry (President), Swissgas, Siegfried Holding AG (Vice President) and others.[4] He is a member of the Management Board at Economiesuisse, President of the Swiss Development Association and President of the Executive Committee of the Institute of Finance and Financial Law (IFF) at the University of St. Gallen.
