Marc Lalonde was a Canadian politician, lawyer, political handler and deep state actor. A lifelong member of the Liberal Party, he is best known for having worked particularly closely with prime minister Pierre Trudeau in positions of government from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s, including as Minister of Finance.
He attended the 1977 Bilderberg meeting. Previously, he had neutralized the Quebec separatist movement when he led a clandestine body within the Canadian Federal Government that collected intelligence on the and organized action against the separatists.
Education
Lalonde was born in L'Île-Perrot, Quebec, and obtained a Master of Laws degree from the Université de Montréal, a master's degree from Oxford University, and a law degree from the University of Ottawa.[1]
Career
At first, he sought a legal and academic career but interrupted it to become a special adviser in 1959–60 to Davie Fulton, minister of justice under PM John Diefenbaker. After practising law in Montreal, Lalonde returned to Ottawa as special adviser to PM Lester B. Pearson in 1967. He stayed on in the Office of the Prime Minister as Pierre Trudeau's principal secretary from 1968 to 1972.[2]
In the fight to suppress the Quebec separatist movement in the early 1970s, Lalonde led a clandestine body within the Canadian Federal Government, codenamed FAN TAN, that collected intelligence on the and organized political action against the separatists.[3]
In 1972, Marc Lalonde ran successfully for Parliament. Under Pierre Trudeau, he held various ministerial portfolios, including being minister of national health and welfare and minister of state for federal-provincial relations. As minister of energy, mines and resources (1980–82), he implemented the National Energy Program. He also was minister of finance under both Trudeau and PM John Turner from 1982 to 1984.[2]
Following Pierre Elliot Trudeau's resignation, he retired from politics in 1984 and returned to private business. A partner with the Stikeman Elliott law firm, Lalonde was an ad hoc judge for the International Court of Justice in the 1990s.[2]
