Lars Magnus Wohlin was a Swedish national economist, civil servant, politician and banker and governor of the central bank Sveriges Riksbank.[1][2]
Background
Wohlin was born in 1933 in Stockholm. He gained a PhD in economics from the Stockholm School of Economics in 1970.
Central Banker
He became Managing Director of the Research Institute of Industrial Economics and state secretary in Gösta Bohman’s Ministry of Economic Affairs.[3]
He was appointed Governor of the Riksbank in 1979. Wohlin had to manage the wave of devaluations that prevailed in Sweden at the end of the 1970s and start of the 1980s. He had great influence over economic policy in times when the Riksbank was struggling with a reduced current account and growing budget deficit.[3]
In September, Wohlin persuaded the Government to devalue the krona by 10 per cent with the aim of improving the current account and preventing continued indebtedness.[3]
He was a BIS board member.
Lars Wohlin stood down as Governor of the Riksbank in 1982.
Later career
He was head of Stadshypotek, a mortgage bank, 1982–1996.
Before the 2003 referendum on the introduction of the euro in Sweden, he was one of the poster names for Citizens Against EMU. He was a member of the European Parliament for the Eurosceptic June List 2004–2006. On April 8, 2006, he announced that he was leaving the June List and instead running for the Christian Democrats in Stockholm County in the 2006 parliamentary election. [4] He sat as an independent in the European Parliament in the years 2006 to 2009.
