Herman Hypolitus Ferdinandus "Herman" Wijffels is a retired Dutch banker. He attended the 1997 Bilderberg meeting as Chairman of Rabobank.
Education
Wijffels studied economics at the Katholieke Hogeschool Tilburg, where he was a member of the Tilburg Student Corps.[1]
Career
From 1981 to 1999 he worked for the Rabobank ultimately as chairman of the board of directors.[1]
After leaving Rabobank, Wijffels was appointed chairman of the Social and Economic Council (SER). Wijffels was succeeded as SER chairman by Alexander Rinnooy Kan in April 2006.[1]
During the Cabinet formation of 2006-2007, Wijffels was proposed on 18 December 2006 by the first informateur (negotiation responsible) Rein Jan Hoekstra as second informateur, with the assignment to supervise the negotiations between the possible coalition parties CDA, PvdA and ChristenUnie. On 20 december 2006, he was appointed to that position by Queen Beatrix. On 9 February 2007, he reported to the Queen, after a debate in the House of Representatives on the coalition agreement reached under his leadership.[2]
That year he was appointed administrator at the World Bank. In the spring of 2007, he chaired the Commission at the World Bank investigating the conduct of Paul Wolfowitz. The commission found irregularities by Wolfowitz and said that he should leave. According to Wijffels, the final decision took far too long [3]
He left the World Bank on 1 November 2008.
In 2009 Wijffels was appointed Professor of Sustainability and Societal Change at Utrecht University.[4] He co-founded the Sustainable Finance Lab there in 2011.
In April 2009, together with Sylvia Borren, Wijffels became co-chair of Worldconnectors, a Dutch think tank which develops "visions on international issues, global Connectedness and sustainability.". He took over the chairmanship from Ruud Lubbers, who had been co-chair since 2006.[5]
