A list of Icelandic Bilderberg participants. The Icelandic Bilderbergers have all supported NATO and the US military bases, arranged to surveil and keep local communists and left-wingers out of power, and liberalized the economy. |
As of 2025, Iceland has had eight Bilderberg participants, although the country has a population of just 393,000 people. All the Icelandic Bilderbergers supported NATO and the US military bases, and many participated in the effort to surveil and keep local communists and left-wingers out of power. A difference from most other Bilderberg nations, the Icelandic participants have not been vocal advocates of European Union membership, although they have supported economic liberalization. The economic "reforms" of Bilderberger Davíð Oddsson to no small extent led to the banking crisis of 2009.
Overview
The political party most closely part of the Bilderberg network and constituting the deep state is the Independence Party.
Local deep politician and strongman Bjarni Benediktsson (Independence Party) was Icelandic Prime Minster for most of the 1960s, when he attended a number of meetings. As Minister of Foreign Affairs, he was instrumental in Iceland joining NATO in 1949, and for giving the United States Air Force a lease on Keflavík Airport plus a number of surveillance stations. The party had a network of nearly 400 representatives who monitored citizens.
Bjarni's son, the politician and journalist Björn Bjarnason (Independence Party), had a heavy Bilderberg habit, attending a dozen meetings between the late 1970s and 1995. In the 1970s during the Cold War, alongside his job as a journalist, Björn regularly met with U.S. intelligence to share with them information regarding Icelandic politics and Icelandic leftist politicians and activists. He was Minister of Justice in 2005 when a report condemned these very kind of activities.
Prime Minister Geir Hallgrímsson (Independence Party) sat on the Bilderberg/Steering committee for most of the 1970s and 80s.
Gunnar Thoroddsen (Independence Party) was Prime Minister 1980-83.He had previously attended the 1966 Bilderberg conference.
Davíð Oddsson, the longest-sitting prime minister of Iceland, was a staunch ally of the United States and strongly in support of NATO. Unlike the Icelandic population, he firmly supported the actions undertaken by the U.S. and its allies in Afghanistan and Iraq.[1] The collapse of Iceland's banking system led to vocal demands for his resignation as Central Bank governor, which resulted in his being replaced as head of the Central Bank in March 2009. Time named Davíð as one of the 25 people responsible the most for the crisis worldwide.[2]
Einar Benediktsson was a high ranking diplomat who attended the 1986 Bilderberg meeting, then in succession Ambassador to the EU, Permanent Representative to NATO and Ambassador to the United States.
Hörður Sigurgestsson was an Icelandic businessman and CEO of the shipping company Eimskip for twenty-one years or from 1979-2000. The company often went by the name of "the Octopus", since its empire seemed to stretch its tentacles far and wide. Hörður was one of the most influential men in Icelandic business for many years. He attended a meeting of the Mont Pelerin Society, without apparently being full member.[3] He also attended the 1989 Bilderberg meeting.
Jon Sigurdsson became a central banker a few years after attending the 1993 Bilderberg meeting.
8 Icelandic visitors have attended the Bilderberg.
