Barbara von Ow-Freytag is a German journalist, political scientist, spook and expert on civil society in Russia. She was mentioned as a member of the German cell of the Integrity Initiative.
Early Life
Ow-Freytag was born on April 19, 1957 in Munich to Meinrad Franz von Ow-Wachendorf and Beata von Zwehl. She is married to the German spook Arndt Freiherr Freytag von Loringhoven.[1][2][3]
Career
After an M.A. (German & French literature) at Oxford University, Barbara von Ow-Freytag became a correspondent for Reuters News Agency (London, Vienna) and foreign editor and free-lance correspondent for the German Süddeutsche Zeitung in Paris and Moscow.[4]
In 1984, Barbara von Ow joined the editorial staff of Radio Free Europe in Munich. Her area of responsibility was the analysis of East German politics. In 1988 she switched to the international editorial department of the Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ), where she was responsible for Eastern Europe.[5] Among her associates was Toomas Hendrik Ilves, later president of Estonia. From 1992 to 1994 she was the SZ's cultural correspondent in Moscow, where her husband was an attaché at the German embassy.
From 2008 to 2013 she was an advisor to the CDU member of the Bundestag Andreas Schockenhoff, the federal government's coordinator for German-Russian "intersocietal cooperation" and a strong opponent of the Russian government. She is currently the International Relations and Advocacy Advisor at the Prague Civil Society Center[6]. She was also Director of the Secretariat of the EU-Russia Civil Society Forum . In 2014 she chaired the working group for collaboration with the Civil Society Forum of the Eastern Partnership[7].
