Belén Garijo López is the Chair of the Executive Board and CEO of German Big Pharma corporation Merck[1]. She attended the 2023 Bilderberg meeting.
Education
She was born in Almansa (Albacete) on July 31, 1960. She graduated in medicine from the University of Alcalá in 1983 and specialized in clinical pharmacology at the La Paz University Hospital (Madrid).[2]
Career
After six years as a doctor in the area of clinical pharmacology, she joined the pharmaceutical industry.[3]
She worked for eight years at the American Abbott Laboratories, in research and development. From 1996, she headed the oncology business unit of the French company Rhône-Poulenc.
In 2000, and after the merger of Rhône-Poulenc with other pharmaceutical companies, the Aventis group was created and she was appointed vice president in this area.
In 2003, Garijo became managing director of Aventis Spain, leading the merger with Sanofi. Since 2011, there has been a global integration between various pharmaceutical companies and groups, with the acquisition of the American biotechnology company Genzyme etc., creating the Sanofi-Aventis corporation.[4]
In 2011 Garijo joined the biopharmacy division of the German pharmaceutical company Merck as chief operating officer. In 2013, she was promoted to president and CEO of that division and, since 2015, she has been a member of the executive board.[5]
In September 2020, the German group appointed Belén Garijo as its new global CEO to take over in May 2021. At the beginning of May 2021, she was confirmed as the leader of Merck.[6]
She is a board member of the Spanish bank BBVA and the French group L'Oréal.
In 2024, she received the John McCloy Award from the American Council on Germany for her commitment to building strong transatlantic relations.[1]
Belén Garijo López is married to a urologist and has two daughters.
