Background

Van Baalen studied at the University of Leiden, where he became a member of the student association Minerva and leader of its affiliated nationalist and militarist association Pro Patria. It has been claimed[By whom?], but not proven, he might have had contacts to more extreme right-wing parties.[1]

Career

Hans van Baalen is a colonel in the Dutch army reserve, a sign of continued deep state activities,[citation needed] and he seems to be particularly involved in regime change activities on behalf of USA/NATO.

After graduation, he joined Deloitte Consulting as director of Public Affairs Consulting.

He joined the liberal party VVD in 1986 and was mainly active as an international secretary. From 1999 to 2002 and from 2003 to 2009 van Baalen was a member of the Second Chamber of the Dutch parliament, where he positioned himself on the right wing of his party, and argued for the reintroduction of conscription. In a radio interview in 2006, he stated that it was lawful for prisoners suspected of terrorism to be subjected to physical pressure.

Van Baalen is considered to be Israel's ally and advocate on the Israeli-Palestinian issue; Israeli media call Van Baalen a well-known friend of Israel internationally.[2]

He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2009, where he is member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Security and Defense Sub-Committee.[3]

"A Dutch pirate and a villain"

On June 28, 2009, Hondura's army kidnapped its president Manuel Zelaya seized power, and held a election with select candidates. [4] Van Baalen and the Liberal International supported the coup. The IL rewarded it by electing coup president Micheletti as its vice chairman in November 2011. "With his courage, he made the democratic presidential election on November 29th possible," stated van Baalen about him and called the coup "an enormous and courageous act in favor of democracy". He stated this kind of liberal democratization should also take place in Nicaragua and the other ALBA countries.

Hans van Baalen was declared persona non grata and banned from Nicaragua in 2009. After meeting representatives of the friendly Nicaraguan party Liberal Alliance (ALN), he publicly called for the people to go out in the streets and demonstrate against the Sandinista government, "as did the East Germans in 1989". Afterwards, he met with high-ranking Nicaraguan military officers, and tried to convince them to support a "Honduran solution". President Ortega called him "a Dutch pirate and a villain".

In early 2014, Van Baalen and Guy Verhofstadt, among others, addressed the demonstrators in Kiev during the Euromaidan regime change in Ukraine.

Van Baalen is one of the 89 people from the European Union whom Russia banned from entering the country in May 2015.

He has been a member of the board of trustees of the German Friedrich Naumann Foundation since 2017.
