Gerardo Broggini was a Swiss lawyer and Romanist[1]. He was a professor of Roman law and private law at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) and Heidelberg and at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan. He attended the 1965 Bilderberg meeting. From 1968 he was also a lawyer in Milan.
Education
Broggini studied law and habilitated in 1956 at the University of Heidelberg with a thesis on Roman law.
Career
He was then a full professor at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) from 1956 to 1961 and at the Heidelberg University from 1961 to 1968 for Roman law, comparative private law and private international law. One of his assistants in Heidelberg was the Romanist Walter Selb.
In 1964 Broggini founded the Association for the Exchange of Ideas between German and Italian lawyers, with the then President of the German Federal Court of Justice, Bruno Heusinger. (since June 2001 "German-Italian Lawyers' Association)[2].
From 1968 to 1990 he taught Roman law at the Catholic University of Milan and private international law until November 1999. He lectured on arbitration until June 2002.
Due to his legal knowledge of German, French, Italian and Austrian law, he is considered one of the pioneers of European legal integration.[3]
