Opposition in other places, never at home

A dissident is a term for a person who has a different opinion and/or opposes the established policy or structure of a society or a state. The dissident remains in the country instead of leaving the country in exile.

In Western corporate media, this positive label is never used on actual dissidents at home, who are ignored or vilified, but only on people in other places (see Wikipedia for examples of usage).

When dissidents are persecuted, it is normally under other pretexts, to hide the political motivation.

Dissidents in other countries are often given open and covert support. For example, during the Cold War the most famous dissidents in Communist Eastern Europe were covertly given wads of dollars or Swiss bank accounts, a practice that has continued in the decades since through use of NGOs, award money and grants.

Dan Dicks“The internet we have today is not going to be around very much longer. They need to control the narrative...

They are starting to clamp down, not on just conservative voices.

It's not about those on the right, it's not about people on the left, it's about anybody who goes against the status quo.”

John Laughland“A feature of today’s mass media culture which many dissidents lazily and wrongly denounce as "totalitarian" is precisely that dissenting views may be expressed and published, but this is precisely because, being mere drops in the ocean, they are never a threat to the tide of propaganda.”John Laughland2010
Social change“Normally, when you challenge the conventional wisdom — that the current economic and political system is the only possible one — the first reaction you are likely to get is a demand for a detailed architectural blueprint of how an alternative system would work, down to the nature of its financial instruments, energy supplies, and policies of sewer maintenance. Next, you are likely to be asked for a detailed program of how this system will be brought into existence. Historically, this is ridiculous. When has social change ever happened according to someone's blueprint?”David Graeber
Harold Thorby“We the government have vital information which we cannot disclose. It is upon this knowledge that we make decisions. You, who are merely private citizens, have no access to this information. Any criticism you make of our policy, any controversy about it in which you may indulge, will therefore be uninformed and valueless. If, in spite of your ignorance, you persist in questioning our policy, we can only conclude that you are disloyal.”Harold Thorby1938
Totalitarianism“One of the hallmarks of totalitarian systems is the criminalization of dissent. Not just the stigmatization of dissent or the demonization of dissent, but the formal criminalization of dissent, and any other type of opposition to the official ideology of the totalitarian system. Global capitalism has been inching its way toward this step for quite some time, and now, apparently, it is ready to take it.”C. J. Hopkins5 May 2021
