Dr. Behlül Özkan is a Turkish academic who attended his first Bilderberg meeting in 2018. His academic studies has been focused on Political Islam in Turkey, and he is decidedly hostile to the Islamist government of the government of [[President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

In February 2016, four months before the 2016 Turkish coup attempt he got an op-ed published by the New York Times, The West Must Stop Giving Turkey a Free Pass, writing that "As Mr. Erdogan seeks to eliminate all opposition and create a single-party regime, the European Union and the United States must cease their policy of appeasement and ineffectual disapproval".[1]

In December 2016, he wrote in the NYT that "Turkey's rapprochement with Russia goes beyond Syria. Lately, Mr. Erdogan has been openly toying with the idea of joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a pact led by Russia and China that is meant to rival the European Union. In doing so, Turkey is turning away from potential partners in the West that still — at least for now — value democracy and human rights, and toward another world of autocrats, pseudo-monarchs and aspiring czars."[2]

Education

He received his BA (1998) degree in Political Science and International Relations from Boğaziçi University. Özkan holds a Ph.D (2009) in International Relations from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.

Career

Since 2014, he was working as an associate professor of international relations at Marmara University.

He has published articles in various academic journals on Turkish politics, security and intelligence during the Cold War and geopolitics.[3] His academic studies has been focused on Political Islam in Turkey and Europe.[4]

Özkan is also a board member of European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR).
