Die Zeit (literally "The Time") is a German liberal, transatlantic national weekly newspaper published in Hamburg in Germany. The newspaper is generally considered to be among the German newspapers of record and is known for its long and extensive articles.

The first edition of Die Zeit was first published in Hamburg on 21 February 1946. as a so-called licensed newspaper, a newspaper that had the permission to publish (license) required by the UK/US military administration in Germany after the Second World War. This gave the paper a decisive commercial advantage at the time.

People - Bilderberg

The newspaper is central in the German part of the Bilderberg network.

Employees have included Bilderberg visitors Josef Joffe chief editor Theo Sommer (in the Bilderberg Steering Committee) and Marion Grafin Donhoff‎‎. In the 5-member board of advisors per 2019, one finds Zanny Minton Beddoes. Former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt was co-editor of the newspaper from 1983, and also acting as its director from 1985 to 1989.

• Stefan Schmitt, Deputy Head of Science and Editorial Journalist, was a spooky Marshall Memorial Fellow 2012.

Funding

In 2019, Die Zeit received almost $300,000 of donations from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It also publishes "free op-eds" from Project Syndicate.

History

The founding publishers were Gerd Bucerius, Lovis H. Lorenz, Richard Tüngel and Ewald Schmidt di Simoni. Another important founder was Marion Gräfin Dönhoff, who joined as an editor in 1946. She became publisher of Die Zeit from 1972 until her death in 2002, together from 1983 onwards with former German chancellor Helmut Schmidt, later joined by Josef Joffe and former German federal secretary of culture Michael Naumann.

The newspaper's first editor-in-chief was Ernst Samhaber. Since he had previously worked in the Reich Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda and for some media of the Nazi government, he was banned from working for two years as part of the denazification in August 1946 and had to be replaced by co-editor Richard Tüngel in the founding year. Tüngel steered the newspaper in a conservative direction. With encouragement from the occupation authorities, die Zeit was a champion of German rearmament, a contentious issue at the time. In the beginning, the newspaper also supported the demands for “bringing back the eastern territories”, now part of Poland.

The paper's publishing house, Zeitverlag Gerd Bucerius in Hamburg, is owned by the Georg von Holtzbrinck Publishing Group and Dieter von Holtzbrinck Media.

Reports

Nord Stream

In June 2023, a Die Zeit, ARD and NOS report by current affairs program Nieuwsuur revealed the US Central Intelligence Agency warned Ukraine not to blow up the Nord Steam Pipeline in 2022. The Americans did so after they had received an alarming report from the Dutch Military Intelligence and Security Service or MIVD. That agency had heard about Ukrainian plans for an upcoming attack from a source in Ukraine. The report mentioned that "The planned sabotage in June was cancelled three months before it did go through, but in September the pipeline was still blown up. The scenario was nearly identical to that exposed by the MIVD three months earlier." Dutch media reported that - according to insiders - the Dutch Minister Defence Kasja Ollogren, and Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Minister Wopke Hoekstra of Foreign Affairs, were informed by the MIVD and subsequent CIA briefings.

“In March, when the possible involvement of Ukraine was discussed, Minister Ollongren emphasized that the support that that country received from the Netherlands and Europa had nothing to do with the question as to whether Ukraine was involved in the bombing of the Nord Stream.

The plan, which was intercepted by the MIVD, put General Valery Zaluzhny, Ukraine's highest-ranking military officer, in charge of the operation. A small team of divers was said to plan to carry out the sabotage from a yacht. Zelensky was said not to have been in the loop.

Last week, The Washington Post reported about this plan based on leaked Pentagon documents, stating that the information had been shared by a European intelligence service. As it turns out, that was the MIVD.”
