Early life
Katharina is daughter of the Federal Minister of Agriculture Jochen Borchert (CDU). She studied law and journalism at the Universities of Hamburg and Lausanne.
As a freelance author, Borchert wrote for the FAZ, Die Welt and c't, among others. In 2002 she started her own blog, Lyssas Lounge, which she ran until 2007. In mid-2006 she became the online editor-in-chief of the Essen-based WAZ media group. In this position she developed the concept for the regional portal DerWesten.de. In 2007 she was promoted to Managing Director of WAZ NewMedia GmbH, in 2008 she was appointed to the Board of Directors of the WAZ Media Group and was thus responsible for the entire online business of the media group.
Spiegel
In 2010, Borchert became managing director of Spiegel Online.[3] After the former publishing director of the magazine Der Spiegel, Fried von Bismarck, left the German Press Council in 2011, Borchert became his successor there.[4]
Mozilla
Borchert has been a member of the Board of Directors of Mozilla Corporation since the end of March 2014.[5] In October 2015 it was announced that from January 2016 she would be responsible there as Chief Innovation Officer. Her successor as managing director of Spiegel Online was Jesper Doub.
In 2017 Mozilla announced it was "strengthening its position in the fight against fake news with a new program — the Mozilla Information Trust Initiative". Borchert stated:
We also have great interest in funding more research into that space. To me, research is an incredibly important foundation to better understand human behavior around fake news, to better understand the effects certain interventions can have. This isn’t a Mozilla perspective so much as my own interest right now: I would like to see more research that explores how people react when they are confronted with fact-checking, with the correction of things that they read and beliefs that they hold.[6]
Deep state connections
She was named a member of the 2011 Young Global Leaders (YGL) by the World Economic Forum in March 2011.[7]
