Wisse Dekker was CEO of the electronics group Philips from 1982 to 1986[1]. After 1986, Dekker became chairman of the Supervisory Board. From 1988 to 1992, he chaired the European Round Table of Industrialists.[2]
Philips
His predecessor Nico Rodenburg was at the helm of Philips for four years from 1977 to 1981. Wisse Dekker's successor as president was Cor van der Klugt from 1986 to 1990.
Dekker worked for Philips throughout his career. In 1948 he started working as an employee of the Southeast Asia Main Country Group. In the fifties and sixties he worked his way up within the Asian branch of the electronics group. In 1966 he became general manager for Philips in the Far East. In 1972 he was brought to Europe and worked in various management positions at Philips Great Britain. Dekker came to the Netherlands in 1979 and joined the board of directors, becoming president three years later.
When Dekker took office as president of Philips in 1982, the company was going through difficult times due to competition from Japan and the failed introduction of a number of products such as the V2000 video recorder. Despite the fact that Dekker continued to reorganize the company and cut jobs, he became popular with the workforce because he managed to restore faith in the company's future.
In contrast to his predecessors, Dekker regularly appeared in the media. He was an advocate of a strong and united Europe.
Dekker died of natural causes at the age of 88 while driving, causing a collision.
