Sir Patrick John Thompson Vallance FRS FMedSci FRCP is a UK businessman/physician who in March 2018 moved from Director of GlaxoSmithKline to become the UK/Chief Scientific Adviser.

Career

Vallance worked for big pharma until March 2018.

COVID-19 "expert"

At the time he was advising the government, Vallance had a deferred bonus of 43,111 shares - a £600,000 shareholding - in GlaxoSmithKline, while the corporation was tasked with developing a "Covid vaccine".[1]

In mid March 2020 Vallance "defended the government's approach to tackling the coronavirus, saying it could have the benefit of creating herd immunity across the population."[2]

On May 5th 2020 Vallance told MPs that masks could have a "marginal but positive impact".[3]

Vallance, as chair of Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies, was one of very few members who was publicly named. He stated in a letter to the UK parliament in April 2020 that the decision not to disclose its membership was based on advice from the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure.[4]
