Denis Georges Marie Ranque is a French businessman. He attended the 2003 Bilderberg as CEO of the armaments corporation Thales. He was chairman of the Airbus board of directors from March 2013 to April 2020[1].
Education
Ranque was born on January 7, 1952 in Marseilles. He is a student of the Polytechnic School (X1970) and a graduate of the École nationale supérieure des mines.[2]
Career
In 1976, Denis Ranque began his career as a mining engineer at the Ministry of Industry where he held various positions in the field of energy until 1983.[2]
He then joined the Thomson Group as Director of Plans for a year. In 1984, he was appointed director of space affairs in the electronics division[3]. In 1986, he was appointed director of the "Microwave Tubes" department of the division, which was spun off in 1988 under the name of Thomson Electronic Tubes (TTE), a company of which he was chairman and CEO from 1989 to 1992.[2]
In April 1992, Denis Ranque was appointed chairman and CEO of Thomson-Sintra Underwater Activities. Four years later, Thomson-CSF and GEC-Marconi appointed him to the general management of the joint company they created in the field of sonar systems, Thomson Marconi Sonar. He resigned in 1996. In January 1998, Denis Ranque was appointed chairman and CEO of Thomson-CSF, which became Thales in 2000, following the merger with Dassault Electroniques and the takeover of the British Racal as well as other companies in the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and the United States.
In 2009, following the purchase of 20.8% of Thales' capital by Dassault Aviation, Denis Ranque left the presidency of this company.[4]
From October 2001, he chaired the board of directors of the École nationale supérieure des mines in Paris, and he became president of the Cercle de l'industrie in September 2002. The two mandates end in June 2012.
From February 2010 to June 2012, he chaired the board of directors of Technicolor.
In March 2010, he was appointed chairman of the board of directors of the National Association for Research and Technology (ANRT).
From 2010 to 2012, he chaired the board of directors of Scilab Enterprises, where he was largest shareholder and director. In July 2010, he joined the board of directors of CGG Veritas as a representative of the Strategic Investment Fund (FSI)[5].
He ends his mandates in June 2012 "to realize a personal project that is particularly close to his heart". It was during the realization of this project that in March 2013, while skipper emeritus and circumnavigating the Atlantic on his sail boat, that he was called by Tom Enders, then president of Airbus. On March 27, 2013, Denis Ranque joined the Airbus board of directors, and on April 2, 2013, he was elected its chairman[6], a position he retains until April 2020.[7].
On December 10, 2014, he was elected a member of the Academy of technologies, of which he assumed the presidency on January 1, 2022[8].
