Pierre Jaans was a bank regulator in Luxembourg.[1]
Education
His university studies led him to Berlin, Paris and Munich, from which he graduated with the Diplom-Volkswirt (economics) degree.[2]
Career
He then went, from 1963 to 1972, to hold positions at the Economic and statistical Research Department of the Deutsche Bundesbank in Frankfurt and then, from 1972 to 1974, at the Department of Fiscal and Financial Affairs of the General Secretariat of the OECD in Paris.
Called to Luxembourg, he was appointed Commissioner for the supervision of banks in 1976 and Director General of the Luxembourg Monetary Institute (Institut Monétaire Luxembourgeois) in 1983, a position he held until his retirement in 1998.[3][2]
An obituary stated that "If he left his high position before the mandatory retirement age, it was because he was deeply convinced that the Euro was a mistake insofar as his zone included deeply divergent economies."[2]

Pierre Jaans stated that the perpetrators of the BCCI fraud "were ready to cheat over years in a coherent way. You can go quite a mile with that. The supervisory environment goes on the assumption that the people you are dealing with are honest businessmen. It's as though you were going to organize a city as if it were under a state of siege."[3]
