Mazie Hirono
Mazie Keiko Hirono is an American lawyer and politician serving as the junior United States Senator from Hawaii since 2013. She is a member of the Democratic Party.
Hirono serves on the Committee on Armed Services, Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, Select Committee on Intelligence, Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, Committee on Veterans' Affairs, and am the Ranking Member of the Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water and Power.[1]
In the wake of the January 2021 Capitol storming incident, Hirono called for the resignation of fellow senators Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley for their opposition to quickly certify the 2020 presidential election Electoral College count.[2] She also called for the Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution to be invoked to remove Donald Trump from office.[3]
Censorship does not exist
In 2017 Hirono demanded that Internet companies adopt a “mission statement” expressing their commitment “to prevent the fomenting of discord.”[4]
During a hearing chaired by Senator Ted Cruz related to anti-conservative bias in big tech, Himono commented (compilation)[5]
There are many areas where the senate should be conducting oversight of the tech industry. Baseless allegations of anti-conservative bias is not one of them...The alt-right continues to use Twitter to organize and spread hate...claims of anti-conservative bias that have been disproven time and again. One of our witnesses, Professor Francesca Tripodi studies partisanship on social media and finds that conservative perspectives abound on Facebook, Google and Twitter. She describes claims of anti-conservative bias as nothing more than a mix of anecdotal evidence which the chairman has acknowledge and a failure to understand the companies' algorithms and content-moderation practices. Professor Tripodi's conclusions are consistent with those of media watchdog Media Matters and others that, anti-conservative bias simply does not exist.
Amy Coney Barrett
During Amy Coney Barrett's Supreme Court confirmation hearing, nominated by Donald Trump in late 2020, Hirono went hard in an attempt to derail Barrett, criticizing her for using the phrase "sexual preference", calling the term "offensive and outdated".[6]
In October 2020, Facebook used a satirical piece of this hearing, titled, “Senator Hirono Demands ACB Be Weighed Against A Duck To See If She Is A Witch,”[7] to demonetize (stop advertising revenue) from the satirical website The Babylon Bee.
The satire also featured many fictitious quotes from Hirono, detailing how she “pulled a live duck out of a massive burlap sack next to her” and declared: “In addition to being a senator, I am also quite wise in the ways of science. Everyone knows witches burn because they are made of wood. I think I read that somewhere. Wood floats and so do ducks—so logically, if Amy Coney Barrett weighs as much as this duck I found in the reflection pool outside, she is a witch and must be burned.”[8]
