17 years working for Microsoft, then Australian online censorship commissioner who wants to "recalibrate" freedom of speech.
|
Julie Inman Grant is Australia’s online censorship ('eSafety') Commissioner, a position she has held since 2017. The position is designed as a link in a collaboration between the big tech corporations and the government. The powers and reach of the position were drastically expanded in 2021, with several new laws against "online harm" and to "promote safer, more positive online experiences."[1]
In 2020, the World Economic Forum designated her as one of the #Agile50, the world’s most influential leaders revolutionizing government.[2]
She is an external contributor to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute[3]
Corporate Career
Grant’s career began in Washington DC, working in the US Congress before taking on a role at Microsoft. Grant worked for Microsoft for 17 years, serving as one of the company’s first and longest-standing government relations professionals, ultimately in the role of Global Director for Safety & Privacy Policy and Outreach. She then moved to Twitter, where she "set up and drove the company’s policy, safety and philanthropy".[4][5]
Opinions
So, I think we’re going to have to think about a recalibration of a whole range of human rights that are playing out online, from freedom of speech to the freedom to – you know – be free from online violence…[6]
Commissioner
As Commissioner, Julie Grant is Chair of the Child Dignity Alliance’s Technical Working Group and Board Member of the WePROTECT Global Alliance.[4]
