Hugo Bütler is a Swiss historian and journalist. He became known as the editor-in-chief of the influential Neue Zürcher Zeitung (a newspaper with a heavy Bilderberg habit).
Education
After graduating from the Cantonal School of Zug in 1963, Bütler studied history, philosophy, Sovietology and German studies at the University of Zurich, with a stay at the universities at Freiburg im Üechtland and Florence and was admitted to the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Zurich in 1974 with a dissertation on Gaetano Salvemini and Italian politics before the First World War to Dr. phil. PhD.
Career
From 1964 to 1967 he was editor of the Zuger Nachrichten. In 1967 he became an employee of the Swiss Telegraphic Agency and in 1968 an editor of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. He was initially head of the "Political Literature" department and from 1985 to 2006 editor-in-chief. Until the end of March 2007 he was the chairman of the NZZ group management.
He is also a member of the advisory board of the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium. He was board member of the Swiss Society for Foreign Policy and the International Press Institute, of which he was President from 2000 to 2002.
According to the Swiss business magazine Bilanz, he is one of the most powerful personalities in Switzerland.
