Pope Francis

Pope Francis (born Jorge Mario Bergoglio) is the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State. Francis is the first Jesuit pope,[1] the first from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere, and the first pope from outside Europe since the Syrian Gregory III, who reigned in the 8th century.

Controversies

Bergoglio and Gustavo Vera

On 24 Feb 2016, Miriam Wuolou, his receptionist, aged 34, seven-months pregnant, was found dead.[2][3][4]

His associate and close friend Gustavo Vera,[5] who has been commenting on the political influence of the pope in Argentina,[6] has been accused by Natacha Jaitt to be involved in human trafficking.

Pope Francis "has declared zero tolerance over [sex] abuse scandals that have beset the Church for decades, but has appeared to struggle to overcome resistance within the Vatican hierarchy".[7]

Covid-19 vaccines

Under Francis, the Vatican has chosen not to support exemptions to COVID-19 jabs on religious grounds, despite the product containing "abortion-derived cell line in development and production of the vaccine as well as the testing"[8]. Pope Francis himself has said it would be "suicide" not to get the shot, and he has been fully injected with Pfizer.

In August 2021, he stated: "Being vaccinated with vaccines authorized by the competent authorities is an act of love. And contributing to ensure the majority of people are vaccinated is an act of love."[9]

Great Reset

Full article: The Council for Inclusive Capitalism with the Vatican

Pope Francis started a partnership between some of the world's largest investment and business leaders and the Vatican, calling themselves "the Guardians".

In July 2022, Francis wrote that there is an "urgent need to reduce the consumption not only of fossil fuels but also of so many superfluous things. In certain areas of the world, too, it would be appropriate to consume less meat: this too can help save the environment.[10]

Laudato si'

Professor Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, a full member of the Club of Rome and a proponent of a drastically lower human population, was an influential figure during the preparation of the encyclical letter Laudato Si in 2015[11]. Schellnhuber is the director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany. In an interview with German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Schellnhuber spoke of his influence on the direction of the encyclical. He said:

"It was hard work, to prepare the insights of science in such a way that now people in the Vatican understand the climate problem much better...The worry of us scientists was, of course, that the text would accept a false balance – i.e., that it would not present clearly the current state of research concerning climate issues, but only carefully maneuver and merely declare that the one side says this, and the other side says that – according the motto ‘One does not know anything precise, but the principle of prevention demands that one acts.'"[12]

Schellnhuber is also associated with the gaia principle." The "gaia principle" proposes that both living and non-living beings on Earth interact to form self-regulating system that contributes to maintaining the conditions for life on the planet. This system is considered to be a living being in its own right, with even some degree of consciousness[13], and is controversial among Catholics.[12]

Meeting with "outcasts"

Pope describes Ken Loach as a "prophet"
Pope grants Stella Assange private audience

On 25 June 2023, Pope Francis told Ken Loach and other artists that they are like “prophets” confronting propaganda, disinformation and the schemes of the influential, during an invitation-only gathering at the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel:

"Like the biblical prophets, you confront things that at times are uncomfortable; you criticise today’s false myths and new idols, its empty talk, the ploys of consumerism, the schemes of power."[14]

On 30 June 2023, Stella Assange tweeted:

This morning @Pontifex granted our children and I a private audience. We are overwhelmed.[15][16]

Craig Murray tweeted:

In the last week the Pope has met with both Ken Loach and Stella Assange. Both treated as "outcasts" for their truth telling by UK society, including the official "opposition".
I think the Pope is trying to tell us something.[17]

Stella Assange is fronting the campaign to have her husband released, but the Vatican did not say if this was discussed in the meeting or if Pope Francis expressed any support for it.

A Vatican spokesman said papal audiences are private affairs.[18]

A Document by Jorge Mario Bergoglio

TitleDocument typePublication dateSubject(s)Description
Document:December 2016 Papal Letterletter6 December 2016Knights of MaltaA leaked "strictly confidential" set of two letters: one from Pope Francis (in Italian & English) to Knights of Malta Cardinal Patron Raymond Burke, who has added his own covering letter addressed to Grand Master Festing. Pope Francis appears to demand that Freemasonry ("relativist" groups contrary to the Catholic faith) be rooted out of the Knights, and that those complicit (e.g., von Boeselager) in practices contrary to Church teaching be dealt with.
