Naples is home to NATO's Allied Joint Force Command Naples (JFC Naples), effectively a renaming in 2004 of its predecessor command, Allied Forces Southern Europe (AFSOUTH), started in 1951. Its responsibility is the Mediterranean and some adjoining areas, including Hungary and the former Yugoslavia. The command is held by an admiral of the US Navy, who is also the commander of the US Naval Forces Europe-Africa (NAVEUR-NAVAF).
