Luigi Guidobono Cavalchini Garofoli was Italian Permanent Representative to the European Union. He attended the 1998 Bilderberg meetings.[1]
Career
He graduated with honors in law at the University of Turin in 1958, and entered a diplomatic career in 1961.
He was consul in Bern, worked in the representation at the OECD and as political advisor at the Italian embassy in Paris, was coordinator of the Italian presidency at the European Commission and followed the accession negotiations of the United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark in the early 1970s.
He was the head of the cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs several times.
He was also secretary general of the presidency of the Council of Ministers, and from 1995 to 2000 he was permanent representative to the European Union in Brussels. He was also the Italian ambassador to Paris 1991-1995..
Outside of his career as ambassador he was chairman of Unicredit Private Banking, director of Astaldi, of the Istituto dell'Encyclopedia Italiana and of Reale Group.
He is a member of the Italy USA Foundation. He was President of the Nuovi Mecenati Foundation for the dissemination of contemporary French culture in Italy, and President of the Circle of Diplomatic Studies.
