4th wealthiest charitable foundation in the world

The Wellcome Trust is a research-charity based in London in the United Kingdom. JFK Jr summarised it as “a kind of hybridized British version of NIAID and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation [1]. It had a financial endowment of £25.9 billion in 2018[2], making it the fourth wealthiest foundation in the world and one of the world’s top funders of health (Big Pharma) research.

The stated aim of the Trust is to "achieve extraordinary improvements in health by supporting the brightest minds", and in addition to funding biomedical research, it supports the public understanding of science. To be noted is that the Foundation is "pursuing its own privately developed objectives without being responsible to anybody but their own boards of directors.”[3]

Former leader of MI5, Eliza Manningham-Buller is Chair of the Board of Governors[4].

History

The Trust was established to administer the fortune of the American-born pharmaceutical magnate Sir Henry Wellcome, with the goal to improve human and animal health.

Financing

The Wellcome Trust had a financial endowment of £25.9 billion in 2018, making it the fourth wealthiest charitable foundation in the world.

During the COVID-19 deep event, Wellcome was co-leading a WHO programme to support new therapeutics. At the same time Wellcome itself holds large investments in companies producing these same treatments, a conflict of interest was not disclosed.[3]

Leadership

The Director of the Wellcome Trust is Jeremy Farrar [5]. Former leader of MI5, Eliza Manningham-Buller is Chair of the Board of Governors[6].

Julia Gillard, the former Prime Minister of Australia, has been appointed as the next Chair of Wellcome. She will will succeed Eliza Manningham-Buller, who is stepping down from the role in April 2021.[7]
