Nuri Çolakoğlu is a Turkish journalist and television personality.
Early Career
After graduating from Robert College in Istanbul, he studied at Ankara University, Faculty of Political Sciences, Department of Foreign Relations (International Relations). He became interested in politics while he was a student. He started working as a copywriter at the TV-channel TRT before he finished school, then as a lecturer and journalist. Meanwhile, he enrolls in his doctorate. Together with Mümtaz Soysal, he makes a study on the land issue in Turkey.
He became a member of the Maoist Revolutionary Workers and Peasants Party of Turkey, and an arrest warrant was issued for him. He was sentenced to 20 years and served 2 years in prison after the 1971 military pronunciamento. After his release, he continued to work as a journalist.[1]
After getting out of prison, he joins ANKA News Agency. Here he establishes the Foreign News Service and acts as its chief. Working with Altan Öymen, Çolakoğlu became the Ankara Bureau Chief of Aydınlık newspaper in 1977.
In 1978, he made a 1.5-month trip to China, Cambodia, Pakistan and Iran with Aydınlık Editor-in-Chief Mehmet Ataberk. In Cambodia, he meets with Pol Pot, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and Prime Minister of Democratic Cambodia. Pol Pot welcomes Atabek and Çolakoğlu very well and even gives a meal in their honor.[1]
Later Career
After the 1980 Coup, he worked for the BBC abroad for a while. Working part-time for Hürriyet while in London, Çolakoğlu became the London Bureau Chief at Milliyet, whose London Representative Office was vacant, until 1987, upon the proposal of Sami Kohen. In 1987, he returned to Turkey as the Editor-in-Chief of Milliyet.
He returned to Turkey in 1987.
After 1990, he took part in the establishment of various TV channels. First, he founded Show TV and Cine5 for businessman Erol Aksoy. He also founded NTV on behalf of Cavit Çağlar and later transferred to Ayhan Şahenk.[1]
Çolakoğlu, who moved to CNN-Turk in 2001, is also a member of TÜSİAD.
