Education
In 2002 he completed his master's degree at the Faculty of Economics of Tallinn University of Technology. This was followed by an additional bachelor's degree in law at the University of Tartu in 2005.
Political career
In 2005, at the age of 27, Ratas became the youngest mayor in the history of the Estonian capital Tallinn. In April 2007, he took a seat in the Riigikogu, the national parliament. When the Government of Taavi Rõivas fell in autumn 2016, Ratas, then 38-year-old, became the new prime minister of Estonia. His first cabinet was in power until April 2019, after which he led his second cabinet until January 2021. Ratas resigned early after his party was accused of corruption. As prime minister, he was succeeded by Kaja Kallas.
On January 29, 2024, he resigned from the Center Party to join the Fatherland Party (Isamaa) instead. In the 2024 European elections, he managed to win a mandate for his new party, after which he moved to the European Parliament. There he became a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy.
Ratas is married and father of two sons and a daughter.
