The University of Manitoba (U of M, UManitoba, or UM) is a Canadian public research university in the province of Manitoba.[1] Founded in 1877, it is the first university of western Canada.

Research at the University of Manitoba has produced various renowned contributions, including the creation of canola oil in the 1970s (as of 2024 one of the most widely consumed food oils[2], and a major cause of ill-health since then[3][4]).

Alumni

U of M alumni include Nobel Prize recipients, Academy Award winners, Order of Merit recipients, and Olympic medalists, among many others. as of 2019, there have been 99 Rhodes Scholarship recipients from the U of M, more than that of any other university in western Canada.[5][6] Moreover, the university has produced countless government figures, including provincial premiers, Supreme Court justices, and Members of Parliament (MPs).

Smartpark

Smartpark Research and Technology Park (or Smartpark) is a research and technology park by the Fort Garry campus, serving as a link between basic research and industry. The park is a subsidiary corporation of the University of Manitoba. Tenants include GMO researchers Bayer and the spooky Emergent BioSolutions.[7]

Gates Foundation

The university is a major recipient of funds from the Gates Foundation, a total of over $315 million in the period 1994-2021.[8]
