Opinions

Covid

June 2020:

Satisfaction with the country in the second quarter was the highest ever measured. People experience "togetherness, respect and solidarity in the corona crisis". They believe in government, they believe that you can rely on fellow citizens. So the fascinating thing is that this exceptional satisfaction is answered this month with actions against the corona measures. For a few weeks now we have been seeing protest instigated by the Viruswaanzin foundation of the dancer Willem Engel. Often protesters who follow the reasoning of antivaxxers: I think the measures are absurd, so I can also decide for others that they are absurd.[...]
And the question is: Could it be that in the last year we also see staged protest, so-called astroturfing, only intended to disrupt the government? It's odd that protests flares up so soon after the country experienced the highest level of satisfaction ever.[2]

The good thing is that we know what the willingness to vaccinate means if government does not want to polarize with unvaccinated people...We know that an 83 percent vaccination rate for corona is too low to keep society open. For example, that party puts the new coalition before choices: The Netherlands as the Gallic village that stands up to advancing vaccination obligations in the EU? That polarization with unvaccinated people continues to be avoided, even if this leads to a too low vaccination rate? (2022)[3]

And about 2G: the principle that people are restricted in their rights because they pose a danger to others through their own actions is of course not new either. That is why drunk drivers are not allowed on the road. Denying vaccine refusers access to shops goes further, of course, but the difference in principle is not that great.[4]

2022 Dutch farmer protest

“But giving in to a livestock industry that after decades of blocking causes a triple problem - climate, nature, water - would not simply be a defeat for politics. }”
