Dutch "Covid denier" who was arrested when he became too much of a headache.

Willem Christiaan Engel is a Dutch activist who founded Viruswaanzin (Virus Madness), and leads it under its new name Viruswaarheid (Virus Truth). The organization protests against the Dutch corona measures and says the risks of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands have been exaggerated and the measures against the spread of the coronavirus impinge on fundamental rights. In 2022 he was arrested for sedition and again refusing to follow the conditions of his release.

Background

Engel dropped out after one year from the course in Biopharma in 2008 at Leiden University. Engel for example believes that reported cases and risks of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands have been exaggerated, and that measures against the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 are used to restrict fundamental rights. He is also against vaccination against COVID-19 and believes the SARS‑CoV‑2 escaped from a lab in Wuhan".

Covid-19

Engel was charged with sedition after requesting citizens to film Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment employees handing out vaccines.

During the Dutch Covid-19 curfew, Judge Tan-De Sonnaville chose to temporarily suspend the verdict of the court of The Hague, who concluded the government of Mark Rutte "continuously talked about the implementation, which proved the urgent need to implement with a law likened to war-time measurements - especially without a parliamentary vote through both chambers - was deemed a constitutional violation of the Dutch people's privacy because the curfew is a far-reaching violation of the right to freedom of movement and privacy and (indirectly) limits, among other things, the right to freedom of assembly and demonstration" in a lawsuit by Engel and his lawyers.

The decision was suspended 45 minutes before the end of the curfew in an expedited appeal after the court denied the tense and seemingly nervous Judge named Maria Tan-De Sonnaville processing the appeal to be judicially disqualified on 4 points brought forward by the plaintiffs earlier. Tan-De Sonnaville amongst other things also allowed the head of the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment Jaap van Dissel to be called as a witness (as he and the cabinet were standing outside the courthouse) without an oath and allowed him to give arguments against the original decision of the court. Arguing on the content of the case was previously forbidden - and to be punished with removal from the session - when tried by the plaintiffs, a possible sign of immediate intervention by the Dutch Deep State.

Engel was criticized by multiple corporate media outlets for her numerous attempts to silence both parties that tried to argue for or against the case in the expedited appeal.

Arrest

In March 2022, Engel was arrested for incitement after Norbert Dikkeboom arranged a campaign against him and nearly 23,000 people pressed charges of inciting violence, spreading medical misinformation, fraud, making statements with "terrorist intent", and threats.

The NL Times has repeatedly termed him a "Covid denier", without clarifying what he actually denied, if anything.

Putin

During the 2022 Russian Invasion of Ukraine he voiced support of Vladimir Putin, and sued the Dutch state for supplying weapons to Ukraine.

Kaag

Engel had two accounts on Twitter banned for posting the address of Dutch Minister of Finance Sigrid Kaag.

ING ban

In 2022, after the ING Bank was found not guilty in discriminating against his organization on criminal grounds, Engel disbanded Viruswaarheid.
