Raymond William Pennock, Baron Pennock was a British industrialist who was President of the Confederation of British Industry between 1980 and 1982. He attended the 1977 Bilderberg meeting.
Education
Pennock was educated at Coatham School and Merton College, Oxford. He served in the Royal Artillery between 1941 and 1946, reaching the rank of captain.[1]
Career
Pennock spent more than 30 years with Imperial Chemical Industries, Britain's largest industrial company, which he joined in 1947, working first in personnel, then in sales, before becoming Chairman of the Agricultural Division. He was promoted to the main ICI board in 1972 he went on to become Deputy Chairman. In 1980 he became executive chairman of British Insulated Callender's Cables.[1]
He was president of the Confederation of British Industry from 1980 to 1982 and of the European employers' lobby, UNICE, which later became BusinessEurope, from 1984 to 1986.[2]
He was first British chairman of the Channel Tunnel project in 1986, but gave up the job a little later after failing to raise sufficient capital.
He was created a life peer, as Baron Pennock, of Norton in the County of Cleveland on 16 July 1982.
