Poul Johan Svanholm was a Danish lawyer, business executive and politician. From 1972 until 1996 he was CEO of what later became Carlsberg, and also was Chairman of the Board of Den Danske Bank.[1][2] He attended the 1984 Bilderberg meeting.

Education

During his studies he was chairman of the Student Council at the University of Copenhagen 1954-55. July 1957 he married Lise Svanholm, née Andersen. In 1958 he became an assistant lawyer in Copenhagen, and a lawyer in 1961.

Career

In 1961 he was hired as executive secretary at the Carlsberg breweries, where he later spent most of his career/ At the same time, Svanholm had a political career as a conservative member of Odense City Council 1966-71 and deputy mayor 1967-71.[3]

In 1972, he became CEO of de Forenede Bryggerier A/S and was chairman of the executive board from 1974. It merged with Carlsberg in 1969, and it fell to Svanholm's lot to implement the merger in practice, cutting excess breweries. During Svanholm's time, the orientation towards international markets was continued and the foundation for Carlsberg's position on the international beer market was built up.[3]

From 1972 Svanholm was a member of the board (vice chairman) of the Brewers' Association and from 1972 a member of the Industrial Council's main board, where the most significant Danish business leaders gathered. Svanholm was also the only Dane in the European Roundtable of Industrialists in 1986-96.

He was 1983-2003 Chairman of the Board of Den Danske Bank and 1978-2010 member and Deputy Chairman of A.P. Møller-Mærsk, and a confidant of Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller.[4] He was also president of Thomas B. Thriges Fond.

Svanholm was also member of Tuborgfondet.

Svanholm died on 17. November 2021 after several years of poor health.[3]
