Paul Anthony Samuelson was an American economist and recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics in 1970. He attended the 1965 Bilderberg meeting.
Background
Samuelson was of Jewish descent. Samuelson grew up as the son of a druggist in Indiana, Florida and Chicago. His younger brother Robert Summers (1922-2012) and his nephew Lawrence Summers (*1954) also became economists.
Education
After attending Hyde Park High School in Chicago, Samuelson studied at the University of Chicago. He received his doctorate from Harvard University in 1941.[1] He was a student of Frank Knight, Jacob Viner, Henry Simons, Paul Sweezy and Joseph Schumpeter.
Career
Samuelson moved to MIT as an assistant professor in 1940 and remained there until his death.[2]
He worked for the National Resources Planning Board from 1941-1943; the War Production Board and Office of War Mobilization and Reconstruction in 1945 (economic and general planning program); the United States Treasury, 1945-1952; the Bureau of the Budget in 1952; the Research Advisory Panel to the President’s National Goals Commission from 1959-1960; the Research Advisory Board Committee for Economic Development in 1960. He was a member of the National Task Force on Economic Education from 1960-1961 and a consultant to the Rand Corporation since 1949.[1]
He was an informal consultant for the United States Treasury and the Council of Economic Advisors. He was also a consultant to the Federal Reserve Bank. In 1965 he was elected president of the International Economic Association.[1]
Samuelson was a member of the Democratic Party and advised, among others, the politician Adlai Stevenson. He was Economic Advisor to Senator, candidate, and President-elect Kennedy and was the author of the January 5, 1961 "Samuelson Report on the State of the American Economy to President-elect Kennedy."[1]
