Air Force general specializing in air supply operations who was vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff 2015-2019.

Paul Joseph Selva is a retired United States Air Force general who was the tenth vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Career

Paul J. Selva graduated in engineering from the United States Air Force Academy in the year 1980. In the same year, he received pilot training at Reese Air Force Base near Lubbock, Texas. Upon completion of his training, he was assigned to the 917th Air Refueling Squadron. He also graduated in 1984 from Abilene Christian University in management and human relations.[1]

After various assignments, he joined the Air Command and Staff College from which he received a diploma in 1992. The same year, he obtained a master's degree in political science at Auburn University.[1]

In 1994, he was given command of the 9th Air Refueling Squadron. He was promoted to colonel in September 1998, brigadier general in January 2004, major general in 2007, lieutenant general in 2008 then general on November 29, 2012. He was appointed commander of Air Mobility Command in 2012[1]. In 2011, he was one of the assistants to the Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen and military adviser to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton[2][3].

In 2014 Selva was appointed commander of United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM). As commander of United States Transportation Command, Selva was responsible for managing all global air, land and sea transportation of the United States Armed Forces due to USTRANSCOM which is part of eleven unified combatant command of the United States Department of Defense which has responsibility to coordinates transportation missions worldwide for global mobility using both military and commercial transportation resources.[1]

Selva also oversaw major components of the military that involve supplies air-dropped to Iraqi security forces and the Kurdish peshmerga, in their campaign against ISIS militia,[4] airdrops that often "accidentaly" ended up with ISIS.

On July 31, 2015, Selva succeeded Admiral James A. Winnefeld Jr., who was retiring, as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.[1] He held this position until July 2019, after which he retired.[5]
