Leif Pagrotsky is a Swedish politician, economist, and diplomat. He attended the 2000 and 2001 Bilderbergs as Swedish Minister for Trade.
Education
Leif Pagrotsky grew up in Gothenburg. He graduated from the University of Gothenburg in Economics in 1975.
Career
In 1975 he was hired by Sveriges Riksbank. In the 1970s and 1980s, he made an official career in the Ministry of Finance. For a few years in the early 1980s, he worked at the OECD in Paris.
In 1990, Leif Pagrotsky became head of planning in the Ministry of Finance. After the election defeat of the Social Democrats in 1991, he moved to a position in the Office of the Social Democratic parliamentary group. When the Social Democrats returned to government in 1994, Pagrotsky was appointed state secretary in the Ministry of Finance.
He held four cabinet-level ministerial positions in the government of Göran Persson from 1996 until 2006, including minister of trade, minister for industry, employment and communications, minister for culture and minister for education. Representing the Swedish Social Democratic Party, Leif Pagrotsky was a Member of Parliament 2006–2012.[1]
He has been Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister. Prior to the referendum on Sweden joining the European Monetary Union and adopting the Euro, Pagrotsky argued against, contrary to the Prime Minister and the majority of the Social Democratic Party leadership.[2]
In 2006 he was appointed Vice Chair of the Council of Riksbanken, Sweden's central bank,[3] sitting until 2010.
In addition to his political career, he has been Chairman of the Swedish Trade and Invest Council Business Sweden, as well as Business Region Gothenburg.[4][5] the European Investment Bank and the Stockholm Stock Exchange.
His financial focus has been on the internal market, globalization, energy policy, and state-owned enterprises.
In addition to Leif Pagrotsky's finance-related positions he has been an advocate for the arts. He has been a board member of the National Theatre of Norway and the Swedish Performing Rights Society (STIM).[6]
From 17 December 2015 to 1 October 2018, Pagrotsky was Consul General of Sweden in New York City.[6] In 2018, Pagrotsky announced permanent retirement from politics following a long and fulfilling political career.[7][8][9][10]
Leif Pagrotsky has been featured in both national and international press and media, he has also authored countless articles himself.
