José Manuel Entrecanales is the executive president of the Spanish infrastructure company Acciona, big in contracts for "renewable energy". He attended the 2009,2010,2023, and 2024 Bilderberg meetings.
Background
José Manuel Entrecanales was born 1 January 1963 in Madrid to an influential family of businessmen.[1] His father was José María Entrecanales y de Azcárate, Chairman of Acciona (and son of José Entrecanales e Ibarra, co-founder of the company) and his mother, Blanca Domecq y Zurita, was the daughter of the 2nd Viscount of Almocadén.
The Entrecanales family is one most successful Spanish business families due to their exclusive ownership of Acciona SA, a conglomerate with a variety of interests, including construction, water, industrial services and renewable energy[2]. The family made its fortune using slave labor provided by the government during the Franco years.[3]
Education
Entrecanales read Economics at the Complutense University of Madrid.[4][5]
Career
In 1985, he began his career as an investment banker at Merrill Lynch in New York and later, London.[6] Between 1995 and 2007, he was chairman of Vodafone España and between 2007 and 2009 he shared the presidencies of Endesa and Acciona.
In January 2004, he inherited from his father, José María Entrecanales de Azcárate, the presidency of the Acciona Group, while his first cousin, Juan Ignacio Entrecanales Franco, became vice president of the company. As Chairman of Acciona, José Manuel Entrecanales has managed to transform an engineering and construction company into a global infrastructure, energy and water services company with more than 50,000 employees and a presence in 52 countries, especially concentrating on solar and wind power plants.[7]
On the occasion of Acciona taking a 25% stake in the electric company Endesa, in October 2007 he was appointed executive chairman of the latter, replacing the previous chairman of the electric company up to that time. Entrecanales held the position until March 24, 2009, when Acciona sold its stake to Enel.
José Manuel Entrecanales is a member the United Nations Global Compact, the World Bank's Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition, and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
He is a Trustee of the Princess of Asturias Foundation,[8] the Prado Museum, as well as Vice President of the Fundación Pro CNIC and the Instituto de Empresa Familiar. He is Ambassador of the Spain Brand (Marca España).
Marriage
Entrecanales is married to María Carrión, and has 4 children: José, Gonzalo, Clotilde and Gerardo. His three sons attended Eton College.[9]
