Jacques-Marie-Maurice de Fouchier was a French civil servant and banker.[1] He attended the 1968 Bilderberg meeting before becoming President of Paribas.
Background and education
Son of Louis de Fouchier, president of the chamber at the Court of Auditors, and brother of Louis de Fouchier (CEO of Crédit du Nord), he studied at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand, obtained a bachelor's degree in law and literature at the Faculty of Letters and Law in Paris, and graduated from the Institute of Political Studies in Paris.[2]
Career
He successively became inspector of finance in 1934, deputy director of the Treasury in 1942, then deputy director of External economic relations from 1944 to 1946.
Jacques de Fouchier created the Financial Union of French and foreign companies (UFEFE) in 1946, which became the French Union of Banks (UFB) in 1950. The following year, in 1951, he founded the Building Credit Union (UCB), then, in 1953, the Company for the financing of household electrical equipment (Cetelem). Fouchier created the Compagnie bancaire in 1959 to bring these companies together.
He became vice-president of the Bank of Paris and the Netherlands (Paribas) in 1967.
In 1969, Jacques de Fouchier became president of Paribas, which he made the main shareholder of the Banking Company. He retained the presidency of Paribas until 1978, then resumed it from 1981 to 1982, and became honorary president.[3]
He was also chairman and CEO of Compagnie financière de Paribas and president of the French Union of Banks.
He sat on numerous boards.[3]
