Hennecke Graf von Bassowitz is a former German diplomat and Ministerialdirigent in the Foreign Office. He worked as assistant to Walter Scheel when he attended the 1983 Bilderberg.

Career

After studying law, Bassewitz first became a journalist. In 1963 he joined the German Foreign Service and was then employed at the embassies in Kuala Lumpur (1966–1969) and Singapore (1969–1971). He was spokesman for German President Walter Scheel 1974-1976, before then working at the embassy in Washington (1976-1979).

From 1979 he was ambassador to Sierra Leone. After working as a section head in the Foreign Office (1982–1985), he was head of the German Information Center (GIC) in New York from 1985 to 1989. In 1989, he was first consul general in Soviet Kiev and became ambassador there with the independence of the Ukraine (1991–1993). He then worked as a sub-department head in the Foreign Office. Most recently, as the successor to Johannes Preisinger, he was Ambassador to Bosnia-Herzegovina from 1997 to 1999. His successor in this office was Hans Jochen Peters.
