Background
Born in Rome in 1946, the daughter of political figures Altiero Spinelli and Ursula Hirschmann, pioneers of European federalism. Her father was at the time a militant - albeit somewhat heterodox - of the Italian Communist Party, while her mother, a German Jew, was the sister of the economist Albert O. Hirschman: the two had met on Ventotene island during their confinement for anti-fascist activities, when Ursula was married to the liberal socialist Eugenio Colorni (with whom she had three daughters).[1]
She was the companion of the economist and politician, as well as one of the founders of the single European currency, Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa, until his death in December 2010.[2]
Journalistic career
A professional journalist since 1974[3], she began his journalistic career writing articles for Il Globo.. She was then one of the founders of the newspaper La Repubblica, where she had a long relationship with her colleague Mario Pirani, and then went on, between 1984 and 1985, to collaborate with Corriere della Sera and La Stampa, first as a correspondent from Paris, where she ended up living, and then as a columnist. In October 2010, and until June 2014, she returned to work for Repubblica as a columnist.[1] Since 2016 she has been collaborating with Il Fatto Quotidiano.
Political career
In March 2013, following the Italian general elections of that year, together with others she launched a petition, with the support of the left-wing periodical MicrOmega, to request legally prevent the potential eligibility of Silvio Berlusconi in the ranks of the Italian Senate, for conflict of interest.[4]
On the occasion of the European elections of 2014, she was one of the founders and main promoters of the coalition The Other Europe with Alexīs Tsipras, a single list of the Italian left aimed at endorsing - among other things - the candidacy of Tsirpas to president of the European Commission.
