Career
Before helping start the Gates Foundation in 2000, Stonesifer spent two decades working in technology. She was a consultant to the animation studio DreamWorks and held several vice president positions at Microsoft. She began her in-house career running Microsoft Canada before being promoted to vice president and revamping Microsoft's Product Support operations.
Later she oversaw the Consumer Products Group and served as senior vice president of the Interactive Media Division. In the latter position, she was responsible for an $800 million business whose product was interactive entertainment, news, information and service products. In addition, Stonesifer managed Microsoft's investments in new online content and service products, including MSN.
In 2010, she was selected by President Obama to be the Chair of the White House Council for Community Solutions.
Stonesifer is a founding board member of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. She served on the board of The GAVI Fund, which pushes for an extensive vaccine program, especially in developing countries. Stonesifer has also served on the U.S. delegation to the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on AIDS.
Stonesifer is married to Michael Kinsley, a political columnist and founding editor of the Microsoft-funded online journal Slate.
Stonesifer is currently (2020) CEO of the charity Martha's Table in Washington DC, (budget 4-6 million[2]), "an institution, a Washington destination for visiting dignitaries and locals alike"[3]. The charity is a feel-good photo-op for the rich and mighty, where "over the years volunteers have included President Obama and family; BET Chairman and CEO Debra Lee; Microsoft founder Bill Gates; and the wives of Mexican president Vicente Fox, President George W. Bush and Russian premier Boris Yeltsin. PricewaterhouseCoopers, the Royal Bank of Canada and Exxon Mobil all regularly send workers."
