Christos Stylianides is a Greek Cypriot politician who in 2021 also was parachuted in as Greece's Minister for the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.[1]

Considered a "hardcore Europeanist", Stylianides advocated Cyprus's accession to the European Union as far back as the mid-1990s,[2], and has had a number of lucrative jobs in the EU bureaucracy[3]. He is a member of George Soros' European Council on Foreign Relations.

Early life and career

Stylianides was born and raised in Nicosia, the son of a shopkeeper. In 1984, he received his degree as dental surgeon from Aristotelian University in Thessaloniki, Greece.[4] He later received executive education in International Development at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Postgraduate seminars in political science, international relations and European Institutions followed.

International career

Stylianides was Government Spokesperson (2013-2014 and 1998-1999) and was member of the Parliament of the Republic of Cyprus from 2006 to 2013. As an MEP, he was member of the Committee on Budgets and substitute Member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy. He was also a member of the Delegation for relations with the US and Substitute Member of the Delegation for relations with Israel.

He was appointed as the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management from 2014 until 2019. In 2014, he briefly worked as the European Union's Ebola Coordinator.[5] He was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in the May 2014 European elections where he sat until 31 October 2014.[6]

Stylianidis was sworn in as Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection in Greece on September 10, 2021, assuming the portfolio of a Ministry that had just been established by the decision of the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis with the aim of creating a model infrastructure in Europe.[7][8]
