A. Charles Baillie was CEO of TD Bank Financial Group until December, 2002.

Background

Charles Baillie grew up in Orillia, Ontario, and attended Trinity College at the University of Toronto, where he studied Political Science and Economics. He graduated with a B.A. in 1962, and then moved on to Harvard for graduate studies. Baillie got his M.B.A. from Harvard's School of Business Administration, and then entered into a highly successful career in finance.[1]

Career

He began working for the Toronto-Dominion Bank in 1964, and eventually became that company's CEO in 1997. He added the role of Chairman of the Board in early 1998. Baillie retired as Chief Executive Officer on December 20, 2002 and as Chairman at the Annual Meeting on April 3, 2003.[2]

During his career with TD, Baillie oversaw the acquisition of CT Financial Services Inc. in 2000. The acquisition of Canada Trust created Canada’s largest retail bank, TD Canada Trust. Under Mr. Baillie’s stewardship, TD rose from the fifth to the third largest bank in Canada.[2]
