Can be used to try to suppress truth |
Mental health purports to be a simple analogue to physical health. This is however, a misleading parallel, which overlooks the fact that it has a long history of exploitation by authorities to try to explain dissent. As such, it is a de facto tool of statecraft.

Establishment misuse
Many establishments have succumbed to the temptation to imply that those who ask inconvenient questions do so because they are ill, and that the questions themselves need no answers. A 2010 paper wrote that:
“The logic of the conspiracy meme is to question everything the ‘establishment’ — be it government or scientists — says or does... Conspiracy theories can be useful for scientists who are so far out of the mainstream in their field that they seek to appeal to alternative funding sources or publication outlets. They also might occasionally surface when a scientist's mental health deteriorates to the point that he or she loses touch with reality.”

In 1928, Walter Collins disappeared from his home. His disappearance received nationwide attention and the Los Angeles Police Department followed up hundreds of leads without success.[6] In the face of public pressure to solve the case,[7][unreliable source?] a boy was found who was not Walter Collins, but who claimed he was. His meeting with Mrs. Collins provided a photo opportunity to try to allay criticism of the LAPD.
When she insisted that the boy was not her son, Mrs. Collins was committed to the psychiatric ward at Los Angeles County Hospital under a "Code 12" — a term used to jail or commit someone who was deemed difficult or inconvenient. She was released ten days after Hutchins admitted that he was not her son.[8] She then filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department.[6]
On September 13, 1930, Christine won a lawsuit against Jones and was awarded $10,800 (approximately $154,000 USD in 2014[9]), which Jones never paid.[6] The last newspaper account of Christine is from 1941, when she attempted to collect a $15,562 judgment against Captain Jones (who was by then retired) in the Superior Court.[10]

In 2006 Clare Swinney brought a complaint to the New Zealand Broadcasting Standards Authority pointing out that TVNZ's claim that Osama bin Laden organised the 9/11 attacks was an outright lie. Shortly afterwards, she was incarcerated for 11 days in a psychiatric ward and subjected to compulsory treatment, The head psychiatrist told a judge that she should remain in hospital as her belief that 9/11 was an inside job was evidence she was "delusional". The judge agreed.[12] An FBI internal memo suggested that "Conspiracy theories about Westerners. e.g. the CIA arranged for 9/11 to legitimize the invasion of foreign lands" were a "potential indicator of terrorist activity".[13] US Marine Brandon Raub was locked up after posting on about 9-11 on Facebook.[14]

The academic research into "Conspiracy theories" is an example of modern day subversion of the concept of mental health, since it associates the belief in widespread high level corruption with madness, but refuses to consider the evidence for this phenomenon, instead preferring to credulously assume that official narratives are if not always true, almost always well-intentioned.
Violence
"This marketing message unfairly stigmatizes people with mental health conditions as dangerous, when, in fact, they are much more likely to be victims of violence than to commit it."[16]
Response
Ruling groups in many societies have defined opposition to them as signs of poor mental health, sometimes requiring treatment such as electroshock, forcible imprisonment or drugs.

John Lennon | “I think all our society is run by insane people for insane objectives... I think we’re being run by maniacs for maniacal means. If anybody can put on paper what our government and the American government and the Russian... Chinese... what they are actually trying to do, and what they think they’re doing, I’d be very pleased to know what they think they’re doing. I think they’re all insane. But I’m liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That’s what’s insane about it.” | John Lennon |

Sixty years ago or so, when my siblings or I were sick enough to be in bed, my mother would phone the surgery and the GP would come to our home to see us. This was perfectly normal. It is probably difficult for Generation Z to believe this really used to happen." |
