Monica Maggioni is an Italian journalist. She has been member of the Italian-American Foundation since 2008, and from 2018, she became president in the Italian section of the Trilateral Commission.[1]
Career
She graduated in Modern Foreign Languages and Literature at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan with a thesis in French literature. From 1989 to 1990 she worked for the newspaper Il Giorno. HEr television career began in 1994 when he was hired by Euronews, a pro-EU all-news satellite television channel.
In 1996 she joined the state TV-channel Rai. In 1997 she moved to the news section TG1 and then to the foreign news section.
In 2000, she is sent to Israel to document the dramatic phases of the second Intifada, and then to the United States to follow the presidential elections which saw the victory of the Republican candidate George W. Bush. In 2001, after 11 September, she was sent first to the Middle East and then to the United States to follow the different stages of preparation for the war.
In 2003, among the Italian journalists present in Iraq during the second Gulf war, she was the only "embedded" journalist, that is admitted among the ranks of the American military to tell the war from their point of view. On several occasions, she returned to Iraq to follow the developments of the conflict.
Since February 26th 2007 it has been one of the new female faces among the conductors of the Tg1 at 8.00 pm. In 2008 Tg1 is sent to North America, also to follow the presidential elections that led to the election of Barack Obama.
On 9 January 2013, the board of the state TV appointed her director of [[Rainews24]. Since the end of 2013 she has been entrusted with the management of the online information portal Rainews.it, together with all the newly established Rai News structure.
She then attended the 2014 Bilderberg Conference.
President of Rai 2015-2018
On 5 August 2015, she was appointed president of Rai, with unanimous approval by the board of directors.
As president Rai and vice president of the European Broadcasting Union she continues to pay attention to the issue of information mamagement. On 31 January 2017 she announced that the Italian Public Service TV and Radio, together with other European broadcasters, is considering starting a fact checking initiative against false news.
She officially left office as president on September 26th, 2018. Her successor is Marcello Foa.
She has been member of the Italian-American Foundation since 2008, and from 2018, she became president in the Italian part of the Trilateral Commission.
